Carpenter ants will travel up to 100 yards away from their nests to find rotted or water-damaged wood. The damaged wood releases a pheromone that attracts them to it. When they locate the wood they chew small tunnels and galleries (they do not eat wood). The ants bring eggs, larvae, and food to store inside the tunnels. These nests are called satellite nests. They are built when the parent nests become overpopulated. The satellite nests allow for the same colony to house more workers, larvae and expand their territory to help find more food. Their diets are similar to other ants. They eat insects, fruits, plant nectar, and various human foods.

Pavement ants get their name based on where their nests are located. They build them under brick or cement pavers, sidewalks, and driveways. They are much smaller than carpenter ants only measuring around 0.3 cm in length. They also build nests inside building homes. Their interior nests are often located inside; insulated foundations, cement slabs, heated floors, and under home appliances. No matter where their nests are located they almost always have piles of sand and dirt. The sand is always located somewhere close to one of the entrances to their nests.

The ant services we offer are interior and exterior treatments. Our interior treatments are usually done during the winter when we aren’t able to spray on the exterior of the home. When we spray inside we use a foam-like product. We use it to fill in cracks and crevices that the ants are coming out from. Each time an ant crosses over a treated area the ant will stay alive long enough to bring it back to their nest inside or outside the home. This way the product can spread across the entire colony. You must wait 30 days for the product to exterminate an ant nest.

Mouse behavior is dependent on the seasons. In the fall mice start to work in hyperdrive to find as much food as they can before winter. Mice forage for food to support their whole group. Mice live in groups of multiple females, their offspring, and one or two males. As the temperatures start to drop groups of mice start to relocate to areas that are temperature controlled. The warm temperatures allow them to continue to breed. Mice do not have a designated breeding season like other mammals. As long as their environment is warm enough in the winter they will continue breeding and having young. One mouse can have between 2-10 litters a year.

Each mouse service starts with an extremely thorough inspection. No two homes are built exactly alike. This means each home has different mouse entry points, limitations, and evidence of mice. We provide our customers with 100% honesty regarding the severity of the problem. We take pictures and send them to our customers showing the major entry points and limitations that may hinder our ability to mouse-proof the home. An example of some limitations include; townhomes, cedar shakes, and low 3-season porches. After our inspection, we come back to the property again to seal all the entry points from the outside. We use techniques and materials that the rest of the industry doesn’t use and make each job blend in with the rest of the home.

One of the largest wasps in Shoreview Minnesota is the paper wasp. They can be between 0.75 and 1.0 inches in length. Each spring they build their unique nests from scratch. They build circular papery nests. The hexagonal cells on their nests that hold their eggs and larvae are visible from the outside. Their nests don’t get very large. By the end of the summer, a healthy paper wasps nest can have between 30-70 workers.

If you’re mowing your lawn and start seeing a swarm of wasps appear around your ankles you are most likely seeing yellow jackets. They are extremely aggressive and are capable of stinging multiple times without losing their stingers. By the end of the summer, one yellow jacket nest can have between 1,000-4,000 workers. They have broad diets that include, meat, fish, plant nectar, fruits, and sugary human foods.

One of the wasp services we provide helps prevent wasps from building nests on the exterior of the home. This service consists of spraying along the foundation, soffits, under lights, and gutters. These products stay active for 2 months and kill any wasp that lands on the sprayed areas after 30-45 minutes. We also provide a wasp service for exterminating large wasp nests around the property. The product we use depends on the size of the nests but for larger nests, we advise waiting 2 weeks for the product to spread to all the wasps living inside. After 2 weeks the wasp nest can be taken down.

Spiders have been on our planet for 400 million years. During this amount of time, spiders have established themselves as a crucial part of the ecosystems in Minnesota and the rest of the world. Without spiders insects that kill crops, and plants and spread diseases would become overpopulated. There are two different types of spiders. There are two different ways spiders catch their prey. There are web-building spiders and hunting spiders. Common web-building spiders include; garden spiders (top left), common house spiders (top right), and harvestmen spiders (aka daddy long legs). Hunting spiders leave their crevices and burrows to go and hunt for their prey. Some of the most common hunting spiders are the wolf spider and the jumping spider.

Spiders are attracted to living in habitats where there is an abundance of insects for them to eat. In Shoreview the most common places to see spiders are by bodies of water. Spiders living near these habitats eat mosquitos, ticks, flies, ants, and beetles. When spiders are seen inside they are often attracted to the home because the home has another insect infestation. They usually live inside unfinished rooms and make webs around the exposed wires and pipes. Other insects inside the home use the pipes and wires to navigate their way throughout the rest of the home. Keeping leaf litter and vegetation away from the home will deter insects from getting inside and in turn keep spiders from getting inside. All landscaping should be trimmed back at least 2 feet away from the home.

Our spider service starts by knocking down spider webs around the home. Knocking down the webs breaks down the spiders’ egg sacs. One egg sac is capable of hatching out hundreds of baby spiders. Another reason for knocking down the webs is that it forces the adult spiders to start moving. As they fall or move out of their webs they are more likely to cross over any sprayed areas. When we spray the exterior of the home we spray around the soffits, foundation, corners, doors, and windows. After our service, the product will stay effective for 2 months. Homes that are close to bodies of water or wooded habitats may need multiple services to stay ahead of the spider activity.

In the summer boxelder bugs live inside female boxelder bugs. These trees are used as host plants and provide them with their main source of diet. They lay their eggs on the leaves, branches, and bark. When the eggs hatch the young nymphs also feed on the helicopter seeds the trees produce. The adults also feed on them as well as grass and fruits. In the fall when temperatures start dropping the swarm toward buildings and homes in search of places to overwinter. During the winter some bugs will wake up from their frozen hibernation state. This happens during sunny days in the winter when the sun heats the windows, roof, and walls enough for them to become active. Activice boxelder bugs in the winter do not lay eggs or mate inside.

Stink Bugs are relatively new to Shoreview Minnesota. They started to get noticed around 2010. They’re not native to Minnesota. They hitchhiked their way from Asia inside shipping crates. Since their first appearance, their population has exploded. They overwinter inside homes and buildings and can often be seen roaming around inside during sunny days in the winter. They don’t mate or lay eggs inside homes in the winter. They mate in the spring and summer. They spend most of spring and summer inside gardens or crop fields. They feed on and lay their eggs on; tomatoes, sweet corn, grapes, and apples.

When we treat for boxelder and stink bugs we treat from the foundation up to the soffit. Each of these insects swarms in large numbers in the fall. They find their way into homes from various entry points. They can find their way inside small cracks in the foundation, siding, window screens, and caulking. They also enter through heat vents, chimneys, and soffit vents that are high off the ground. Because of all the possibilities for them to get inside we never promise that there will be 0 bugs inside the home in the winter. Our service will significantly cut down the population living inside by 80 -90%. If the service is done while large swarms of boxelder and stink bugs are seen on the exterior there is most likely already a population that made their way inside. The service is more effective before the swarms appear.

The invasive emerald ash borer is spreading through Shoreview quickly. They infect and slowly kill ash trees by their larvae eating the cambium layer directly below the bark. As this layer becomes damaged the trees are no longer able to spread essential nutrients and water to the rest of the tree. Infected ash trees need to be either cut down or treated and saved. Saving a tree has far more benefits than cutting one down. Mature ash trees are impossible to replace. Just looking at large ash trees provides health benefits such as; lower blood pressure, reduced stress, and even benefits the immune system. Saving a tree also has environmental benefits. One ash tree can absorb 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year!

There are multiple different ways to treat an ash tree that is infected by the emerald ash borer. But not every treatment is as effective as the next. Our professional arborist has tested all of them and found the treatment that is the most effective. The treatment we use is micro pneumatic injections. This treatment lets us measure the dosage for each injection individually. That way the product can spread evenly throughout the entire tree.
