Carpenter ants are thought to be as destructive as termites. Termites are insects that depend on the nutrients and cellulose inside the wood to survive. They eat and digest the wood. Carpenter ants only chew wood they do not eat it. They also only chew rotted or water-damaged wood. The piles of frass or sawdust found inside homes with carpenter ants prove they aren’t eating the wood. They chew small tunnels into the wood to store their eggs, larvae, and pupa. The water causing the wood to rot will cause more structural damage than actual ants. They will travel up to 100 yards to find wood to build a nest.

Pavement ants get their name from the locations of their nests. They build their nests under driveways, garages, and brick or cement patios and porches. Their nests are usually marked with piles of sand and dirt next to the entry points to their tunnels. When they are found inside, especially in the winter their nests can be found in places with heavy moisture. Some of the most common areas are; under heated floors, insulated foundations, basement cement slabs, and under various home appliances.
