Did you know that there is an invasive insect called the emerald ash borer that is killing ash trees all across Minnesota? These insects lay eggs on the bark of ash trees. When the eggs hatch the larvae chew their way under the bark into the cambium layer. This layer of the tree marks the youngest part of the tree or the outermost ring. The emerald ash borer larvae feed on the layer before becoming adults. As this layer becomes more damaged the ash tree is no longer able to spread essential nutrients and water to all the branches and leaves of the tree. Infected ash trees are easy to identify as the highest branches start to die first.
When dealing with an infected ash tree there are only two options; cut the tree down or save the tree by treating it. Saving large and mature ash trees has multiple benefits including; health benefits, environmental benefits and cost benefits.
