In Minnesota, a sign of spring is when the sub-pumps start working overtime. The increase in groundwater is also the start of moisture pest season. Centipedes and moisture pests originate under leaf litter, mulch, and wet soil that is close to or touching the home. Insects such as silverfish, earwigs, and springtails all exist on this planet to help break down dead organic matter. They are living and breathing composters! They feed on leaf litter and mulch to survive. This is why it’s important to pick up any leaf litter that is touching the home or inside basement gully windows. Over time this causes insects to make their way inside basements that are dealing with excess moisture. Dehumidifiers are another helpful remedy in keeping them from getting inside.
Prevention
Our services for moisture pests and centipedes include interior and exterior treatment options. Interior treatments are not as effective as exterior treatments. All the insects you see inside came in from the outside. Our exterior treatment focuses on applying a barrier around the foundation. We also spray 1 foot away from the foundation inside any leaf litter, soil, and landscaping that touch the home. The product we use stays effective for 2 months and will kill the insects before they get inside. Our interior treatment focuses on treating any unfinished rooms and basements. This treatment doesn’t keep the insects from getting inside but will kill the majority of them that are inside already.
