Our Fall Insect Service is Designed to Keep Insects from Overwintering Inside your Home

Overwintering Fall Insect Service

Our service involves spraying a barrier around the exterior of the home. The barrier kills the boxelder bugs, stink bugs, and any other insects that land on it before they can get inside. The product is effective for 2 months once it has dried to the surface. We apply the product along the entire foundation up to the soffits and around all the windows and doors. These bugs are capable of flying and can fit through the smallest cracks and crevices.

Boxelder Bug Behavior

Boxelder bugs are commonly seen swarming in the fall. Most of them can be found on the south side of buildings and homes. As temperatures start to drop, the boxelder bugs soak up as much sun as they can before getting inside to overwinter. They find their way inside through various entry points. The most common include: cracks in the foundation, cracks in the siding, under weatherstripping, and around windows and vents. Once they get inside, most bugs will stay dormant until spring. The boxelder bugs that are visible inside the home wake up during sunny days in the winter. The sun warms up the windows, walls, and roof enough for some of them to become active again. The bugs that are active in the winter will not breed or lay eggs inside the home.

Boxelder bugs start mating in the spring until mid-summer. They wake up in the spring and can be found inside looking for ways to get out. Once outside, they start moving towards female boxelder and maple trees. They lay their eggs on the branches, trunk, and leaves. These trees produce helicopter seeds that the adults and young nymphs feed on. Boxelder bugs will also eat vegetables, fruits, and grass inside gardens.

Brown marmorated stink bug behavior

Stink Bug Behavior

The most common stink bug species in Minnesota is the brown marmorated stink bug. They are an invasive species that was first seen in Minnesota in 2010. They hitchhiked their way from Asia inside shipping containers. Since their first appearance, their populations have multiplied drastically. They start swarming towards buildings and homes in the fall in search of places to overwinter. They make their way inside through chimneys, windows, soffits, vents, and flumes. Most stink bugs stay in a dormant state all winter inside attics and fireplaces. The few that are seen crawling inside in the winter wake up during sunny days in the winter. The bugs that actively move around in the winter are not mating or laying eggs inside the home.

Brown marmorated stink bugs leave the homes and buildings in the spring and start mating right away. They lay their eggs on the leaves of different crops and plants in the spring and summer. Some of the most common plants include: sweet corn, grapes, berries, and tomatoes. Their eggs hatch, and the young larvae and adults will feed on the plants and fruit, often damaging or bruising the crops.
