Pavement Ants Inside

Signs of pavement ants

Signs of Pavement Ant Activity

Pavement ants inside homes make their nests inside floorboards, under heated floors, in unfinished rooms, inside insulated foundations, or in places with excess moisture and heat. Pavement ants that have nested inside can stay active all year. A sign of a pavement ant colony living inside would be if there are winged ants. This means that they are reproducing and mating in the home or looking for a place to start a new nest. During warmer months pavement ants that are outside create mounds of sand on top of driveways, sidewalks, brick pavers, etc. Even though the nests are located outside it is still common for the worker ants to make their way inside to forage for food and water in the spring and summer.

Ant treatment service

Pavement Ant Treatment

There are two different pavement treatments that we provide for our customers. One of them is for exterminating active pavement ant nests in the middle of winter. This is an interior treatment. Our techs spray a foam product inside cracks and crevices where the ants are coming out. When it’s warmer out we spray a product around the exterior foundation of the home. The ants cross over both products and bring them back to the nest located under the floor, inside the foundation, or outside. It takes a few hours for the ants to die from the product. This allows them to spread our product throughout the rest of the colony which lives underground. After 30 days the entire colony is exterminated.

Pavement Ant Identification

pavement ant appearance

Appearance

Pavement ants are one of the most common ants living in Minnesota. They are small and are either all brown or brownish-black. Their antennas are unique in that they have 12 segments and on the tip is a 3-segmented club. Another distinct feature is their small spine with two bumps. This spine connects the abdomen with the thorax. They also have winged males and females. The winged ants are slightly larger than the workers. The winged ants are called swarmers, commonly seen in late spring to mid-summer.

pavement ant behavior

Behavior

These ants build nests made up of sand and sediment in many different areas. They can be spotted nesting under rocks, open fields, and trees. In suburban areas, they can be found nesting under sidewalks, porches, patios, driveways, and building foundations. These ants prefer nesting in areas with high moisture levels. Each nest is capable of having over 10,000 workers. 10% of the ants will live their entire lives underground inside the nest. The worker ants that leave the nest usually do so at night in the summer. These ants eat a large variety of protein-rich and sweet foods. A few of their favorites include; dogfood, nectar, seeds, insects, plant and fruit juices, etc. Anything that falls on the ground or floor is fair game for a pavement ant.

pavement ant reproduction

Reproduction

It is common to see winged male and female ants swarming in the spring. But depending on where the ant colony is located swarmers have been spotted in the late fall and winter. This can happen when a colony is in a temperature-controlled area. Although they only mate with one another in the spring and summer. After mating the queen finds an area to burrow. It takes about 2 to 3 months for the Queen to develop worker ants.
