Carpenter ants are commonly found in Prior Lake. They are between 0.35-1.0 inches in length. They nest inside rotted wood in trees, tree stumps, and homes. Inside their nests, they chew small tunnels or galleries in the wood to store eggs, larvae, and food. The ants seen above ground only make up 10% of the entire ant colony. The rest of the colony stays inside the nest. They use the soft wood to create a microclimate to help their pupa and larvae grow into healthy worker ants, male ants, or queen ants. Both male and queen ants have wings and mate in early to mid-summer during a nuptial flight ritual. After the mating the males die and the females fly to locate a new nesting sight

Pavement ants or sugar ants are much smaller than carpenter ants. They are between 2.5-4 millimeters long. When living outside they build their nests under driveways, garage slabs, sidewalks, and patios. In the winter they can be found nesting inside homes under floor boards, heated floors, and various home appliances. A sign of a pavement ant colony living inside would be seeing ants with wings. The winged ants are either signs of the ants reproducing or locating a new nesting sight.

These habitats include places around bodies of water such as; lakes, marshes, and swamps. In these habitats mosquitos, flies, ticks and other insects provide spiders with an all-you-can-eat buffet. When it comes to spiders living inside a home the same thing applies. Spiders are commonly found living inside homes with other insect problems. Spiders will populate places that provide them with the most food.

Since their first appearance, their population has exploded. In the summer these insects can be found living around various fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes, peaches, apples, corn, and grapes are a few of the most common. When temperatures start dropping they become motivated to find places to overwinter. Some of the most common ways they get inside are through soffit vents, chimneys, and the roof line
