Carpenter ants build two different nests per colony. A parent nest and a satellite nest. The parent nest is home to the egg-laying queen, her larvae, pupae, and over 2000 worker ants. Some worker ants leave the nest to create a satellite nest which is commonly found inside homes and buildings. These nests provide a warmer and dryer area to help develop the larvae and pupae into more workers. These nests are also used to help the ants find more food and increase the colony’s territory. The ants inside a satellite nest chew galleries or tunnels through rotted or water-damaged wood. They store their larvae, pupae, and food Inside the tunnels.

Worker Length: 0.35-0.5 inches

Pavement ants are reddish-brown or black. They are one of the most common ants to find inside. They build their nests under driveways, sidewalks, insulated concrete foundations, heated floors, and slab-on-grade homes. To build their colonies they focus on foraging for protein. Protein is what their larvae and pupae need to grow. This includes things like peanut butter, grease, seeds, and dead insects. During the winter these ants put a halt to growing their colonies. Because of this, their diets change to focus more on preserving energy. This means they eat more foods that are rich in sugar and carbohydrates.

Mice, like insects, are attracted to the heat inside your home. But, mice don’t hibernate like other insects and are active all winter long. They are usually still running in and out of the home, foraging for food to hoard and store during winter. But due to the cold temperatures mice are going to spend a lot more time inside than out. That means they will most likely be breeding inside as well. Mice breed all year long and can have up to 10 litters a year with 5-6 young per litter. This means that a mouse problem can get out of hand quickly if not taken care of right away. There are many different ways in which mice can find their way inside a home. Lots of times it’s through the foundation but it can also be from climbing trees, and chimneys that are overlapping or touching the roof of the house.

Wasps have similar behaviors including what they eat and where they live. Wasps living in a colony have roles to provide for the rest of the colony. For most nests, only around 10% of the wasps leave the nest. For the wasps that leave the nest, they are either foraging for food or foraging for building material to grow the nest. Most wasps foraging for food kill other insects for protein or scavenge through human food or fruits for sugar and carbohydrates. The wasps looking for building material chew on dried-out and untreated wood. They mix the pulp of the wood with their saliva to create the material that their nests are made out of. Most wasps don’t leave the nest this includes the reproducing queen.

These spiders are categorized as web-building spiders. They can vary in color from light brown to nearly black. They are commonly found inside homes building nests in corners close to the ceiling and floor. In these nests, they are hunting for common household pests like; flies, mosquitos, ants, wasps, and other spiders.

Length: 0.15-0.24 inches

These spiders vary between light to dark brown or gray bodies. These spiders are categorized as hunting spiders. This means they do not spin webs. Instead, they live on the ground and leave their burrows or crevices to go hunt. In many instances, they will carry their prey back to their layer.

Length: 0.25-1.0 inches (or more)

Our spider service is focused on knocking down as many webs and egg sacks as we can. One spider egg sack can hatch out over 100 little spiders. We use a duster that reaches around 25 feet high. After knocking down the webs we go around the home spraying a product that sticks to the surface of the home for 2 months. Even when the product is dry the product will still kill any spider that touches the treated area.

Boxelder bugs in the spring and summer they can be found living on female boxelder trees. These trees offer the insects food and an area for them to mate and lay their eggs. The insects eat the helicopter seeds that these trees produce. In the fall they start looking for areas to overwinter. During this time you can find them clustering around buildings and homes, especially on south-facing walls. As the temperatures start to drop in the winter most insects stay in a dormant state in between the walls. On sunnier winter days you may see some roaming around the inside.

Stink bugs in the spring and summer can be found living on various different plants. They eat crops and lay eggs on the leaves of the plants. Some of the foods damaged by stink bugs include; tomatoes, sweet corn, grapes, and apples. When the temperature starts to drop in the fall they start searching for places to overwinter. They were first found in Minnesota in 2010 and there is still not a 100% effective way to keep them from getting inside homes. We have witnessed that they find their way in by entering through the attic or chimneys. During the winter most stink bugs overwinter inside attics.

Our boxelder bug and stink bug treatment is thorough. For this treatment, we spray the entire house from top to bottom or as high as our backpack sprayers will go. Lots of time is spent focusing on exterior south-facing walls. Most insects will congregate there to stay warm in the fall. The treatment must be applied in the fall before the insects are seen landing on the home. When the bugs are seen on the home it is likely that there is a population already living inside.
