In Lino Lakes Minnesota, the two most common ants are pavement and carpenter ants. Carpenter ants do not eat wood to survive like termites they chew it. They chew tunnels or galleries through water-damaged or rotting wood. Because spiders eat insects they choose to live in habitats that are home to lots of insects. These habitats include wetlands, forests, and lakefronts. Lots of insects are attracted to moisture and even lay their eggs in water. The most common of these insects in Minnesota include; mosquitos, flies, ants, and ticks. Around homes, spiders will often find their way inside when there is leaf litter and thick shrubbery that is touching the home. Keeping all plants trimmed back 3 feet away from the siding will reduce the amount insects and spiders that get inside.

As we knock the webs down the spider occupying the webs starts moving around more and becomes more likely to cross over any sprayed areas along the home. Boxelder bugs are commonly seen in Lino Lakes Minnesota in the fall and sometimes inside in the winter. During the fall these insects start searching for areas that they can overwinter inside. As they make their way inside for winter they become attracted to south-facing windows and walls. These areas of the home heat up when it’s sunny. This warms their bodies up enough for some of them to become active again. When inside these insects do not mate or lay eggs. Their mating season starts in late spring and they lay all their eggs on female boxelder and maple trees that produce helicopter seeds.

Stink bugs are invasive to Lino Lakes and the rest of Minnesota. Their population has increased significantly since their first sightings in 2010. Stink bugs are also insects that overwinter inside homes and businesses. They will often find their way inside attics and chimneys. They become more active inside when the sun warms up the roof and bricks outside in the winter. When inside they do not mate or lay eggs. Their mating season starts right away in the spring and goes until the end of summer. They lay their eggs on fruit and vegetable plants that they feed on. The most common include; grapes, sweet corn, tomatoes, and apples.

The best time to treat boxelder bugs and stink bugs is in the early fall. We spray along the foundation, around windows, and doors, and cover most of the siding on the home. The product stays effective for 2 months. While it’s effective it will kill any insects that land on sprayed surfaces before they get inside.

There are multiple benefits to treating ash trees infected by the emerald ash borer instead of cutting it down. Cutting down a large can cost you thousands of dollars. As more and more ash trees become infected the cost of cutting them down will continue to increase. Treating a tree is much cheaper and will also provide a benefit to the environment. Large mature ash trees remove harmful chemicals from the atmosphere. One ash tree is capable of absorbing 1000 lbs. or carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year.
