Carpenter ants vary in color from reddish-black or all black. Their antennas are bent in the middle at an almost 90-degree angle. When they are found inside they are most commonly inside a satellite nest. These nests provide the ants a place to home their larvae, pupa, and food. The nest outside that houses the queen ant is called the parent nest. Satellite nests allow the carpenter ant colony to grow and expand. Their diets consist of; insects, plants, plant juices, fruits, sugar, and grease. THEY DO NOT EAT WOOD! Carpenter ants chew on wood to make tunnels or galleries. They prefer to chew through wet or water-damaged wood. When carpenter ants are seen inside it means that there is rotted wood inside the home or sometimes it’s because of a rotted deck outside.

Pavement ants can be found living underneath pavers, driveways, sidewalks, and inside under heated floors, kitchens, and cement slabs. They are easy to spot because there is usually sand in the vicinity of where their nests are located. The ants can vary in color from reddish brown or black. Some easy ways to tell them apart is by noticing their thin spines with 2 bumps and their clubbed antenna. Their diets in the winter focus more on keeping the ants that are currently in the colony alive instead of growing the colony. This means that in the winter the ants eat food with sugar and carbohydrates for storing energy. In the warmer months, the ants feed on a protein-heavy diet. The protein helps the pupa and larvae to grow into strong worker ants.

No matter what type of ant is inside your home the service stays the same. If there are ants inside in the winter we change the service to first treat inside. We spray foam inside any cracks and crevices that ants are crawling out of. The ants get the product on them and bring it back to their nest where they spread it among the ants that never leave the nest. When it’s warmer outside we treat around the exterior of the home. We create a barrier around the foundation of the home so that the ants living outside die before they make their way into the home. Both of these products take 30 days to eradicate any ant colonies inside and outside the home.

A house mouse is one of the most commonly found mice living inside homes in Minnesota. They have tall rounded ears, pointy snouts, and black eyes. Their fur can differ between grey, light brown, and black. Like most mice in Minnesota, they breed all year long. They can have between 5-10 litters a year, and each litter has around 5-6 pups. When the pups are born it takes 35-49 days for the mice to become sexually mature.

Lifespan: 1-6 years

Average Vertical Jump: 1-1.5 feet

A deer mouse is another very common mouse to find inside homes in Minnesota. They get their name from their similarities to deer. Based on their white bellies and brown or grey fur. They breed all year long and can have between 3-4 litters a year of about 4-6 pups. Once the pup is born it only takes about 35 days for them to be sexually mature.

Paper wasps have bright orange antennas and thicker black stripes than their cousin the yellow jacket. Paper wasps are usually the easiest wasp nest to treat for. Their nests are not enclosed in a protected layer. The hexagonal pattern is easily visible and the nests are in areas where they can stay dry from the rain. Their diet consists of other insects, sugar from fruits, sometimes human foods, and nectar from flowers.

Length: 1/2-1.0 inches

Yellow jackets are slightly smaller than paper wasps and have black antennas instead of bright orange. They are the most aggressive wasp here in Minnesota. At the beginning of fall their main diet of flying insects is diminished. Since they have less food they become hungry and their aggressiveness is enhanced. Their nests are commonly hidden inside structures or in the ground. Because you cannot see how many wasps live inside a nest, it makes it nearly impossible to eradicate the nest with over-the-counter products.

Length: 3/8-5/8 inches

Bald-faced hornets are white or off-white in the face with an almost solid black abdomen. Their nests are unique in that they are enclosed inside a papery pulp layer on the outside. They are always off of the ground as well. Yellow jackets can make similar nests as well but are not as common. Their diet consists of insects. They are even known to eat other yellow jackets and bees. A colony of bald-faced hornets is capable of wiping out an entire wasp or bee colony.

Bumble bees have thick black and yellow hairs across their bodies which help them adapt to the cold Minnesota weather. The honey bee is slightly smaller and has yellow-colored hairs. The hairs on both species also help them carry pollen between flowers. Unlike the diets of wasps which focus more on getting protein from eating other insects a bee’s diet consists of nectar and pollen. A nest that is found in the lawn should not be treated and instead relocated. The only time BOGO will treat a bee nest is if the bees are flying inside the home.

They get their name from their long legs which are 4 times bigger than their bodies. They vary in colors between brown, tan, or grey. These spiders are web-building spiders. They use their webs to trap their prey. When an insect is trapped in their web they quickly wrap them up and bite them releasing a poison that kills the prey. These spiders are extremely common. They are found living in spaces that are undisturbed and commonly make their webs in corners. Unlike many spiders that may be territorial, these spiders can be found living in groups which makes them more of a nuisance than other spiders.

The house spider is one of the most common spiders that are found inside homes in Minnesota. Their colors can be grayish-brown or all-brown. Like all spiders that are active inside they are usually drawn inside due to high humidity. Dehumidifying the basement and home will keep other insects from getting inside. When there are fewer insects there is less food for the spiders to eat.

BOGO’s spider service is very effective. But it’s important to know that the spray we use on the home is only effective for 2 months. Customers can notice a difference right away by only focusing on the exterior of the home. First, we will walk around the home knocking down any visible cobwebs that are low enough for our duster to reach (15 feet). If there is a large population of spiders living inside an interior treatment can be effective by only focusing on the unfinished areas and areas with high moisture.

Boxelder bugs overwinter inside the walls, attics, and floorboards. Sometimes boxelder bugs are spotted moving around inside. This happens on sunny winter days when the sun heats the home enough for the insects to defrost. They do not mate or lay eggs in the winter while they are inside. Their mating season is in July-August. They breed and lay eggs in female boxelder trees. These trees provide them with their main source of food as well. They eat the helicopter seeds that the trees produce. In the fall the insects fly to buildings and homes in search of places to overwinter. Check weather stripping, window screens, cracks, and openings in the roof to prevent swarms of them from getting inside.

In the winter time stink bugs are most commonly spotted inside attic spaces and chimneys. These insects are relatively new to Minnesota and were first spotted here in 2010. Since then they have become a huge nuisance. They eat and destroy different crops. Crops such as; apples, sweet corn, grapes, and tomatoes. They start breeding right away in the spring and lay eggs on the various crops that they feed on. There is still a lot we are still learning about stink bugs. BOGO is currently performing trails to find the most effective way to treat for them.

The most effective time to spray for stink bugs and boxelder bugs is early fall. It’s important to treat before the insects start swarming on the exterior of the home. Once the insects are visible on the outside chances are a few have already made their way inside. When we are spraying the outside we cover the entire house. For boxelder bugs, it’s important to spray around the foundation. Stinkbugs are more commonly entering the home through the roof and chimney which makes it more effective to spray up high.

The emerald Ash borer was first spotted in Minnesota in 2009. Since then they have infected thousands of ash trees but not all of those trees need to be cut down. There are multiple reasons why you should try and treat your ash trees instead of cutting them down. One of the benefits is saving money. Because the emerald ash borers are becoming more prevalent many tree care companies are increasing their prices to cut them down. There is also a large cost for disposing of infected ash trees. Treating a tree is much cheaper and you only need to retreat a tree every 2 years. Another benefit of not cutting ash trees down is the environmental benefit. One ash tree can absorb 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere in one year!

Our ash tree service performs pneumatic micro-injections. The service starts by drilling individual holes around the bottom of the tree. We drill each hole into the largest roots of the tree. After the holes are drilled we inject the product into each hole individually. This allows for an equal amount of product to be injected into each injection site around the tree. Out of all the ash tree treatments, this is the most effective in the industry.
