Carpenter ants are commonly found inside homes in Inver Grove Heights. It’s a common misconception that carpenter ants eat wood like termites. This is not true. Termites eat wood to survive. Carpenter ants only chew small narrow tunnels through wood. The debris they leave behind is known as frass. Frass looks like sawdust but inside you should be able to find remnants of their food. This could include seeds, nuts, and bits and pieces of other insects.

Keeping any shrubs and trees from overgrowing near the home will help keep insects and spiders away from the house.

The emerald ash borer has infested almost every ash tree in Inver Grove Heights. They infect the trees by laying their eggs inside the bark. As the eggs hatch the young larvae chew through the bark until they reach the cambium layer of the tree. This is the outermost ring of the tree or the youngest part of the tree. As they start to feed on this layer they slowly make it impossible for the tree to spread the necessary water and nutrients up to the tree’s canopy to stay alive.
