Carpenter ants don’t eat and digest wood like termites. They chew on the wood and spit it out. What comes out of their mouth is known as frass. From a distance, the frass looks like sawdust. At a closer inspection, you will see bits of their food mixed inside the piles. Parts of dead insects, seeds, leaves, and nuts are a few of their most common foods

Winged carpenter ants

Winged Ants

Winged carpenter ants are mostly seen between April-July. Winged ants are a sign of mating season or the beginning of a new ant colony. Male and female carpenter ants both have wings. After mating the male dies and the female flies to locate a place to start a new colony.

Hearing Sounds

For homes that are heavily infested, you may be able to hear them. Carpenter ants are usually active at night. During this time it’s possible to hear them chewing through the wood. This sound is described as a clicking or crackling sound. As they chew the wood, it becomes hollow. The hollow wood makes a unique sound that could be a sign of a carpenter ant nest inside.
