Carpenter ants are one of the most common ants in Minnesota. They are commonly compared to wood-eating termites. Luckily the structural damage they cause is not as severe. Each of our carpenter services comes with a one-year warranty.

Signs of Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants often get misunderstood. Most people believe that they eat wood like termites. Termites need to feed on wood to survive. They even have specific bacteria in their gut that helps them digest it. Carpenter ants do not eat wood and are only attracted to wood that is already damaged. They chew through wood that is water damaged or rotting. The water-damaged wood releases a pheromone that attracts the ants to travel up to 100 yards away to build a nest inside the wood. The water-damaged wood is softer and easier for them to chew through. As they chew they spit out all of the debris. One of the most common signs of a carpenter ant infestation is seeing piles of sawdust or frass. To know the sawdust is coming from carpenter ants look for pieces of dead insects, seeds, and nuts. This is what makes up their diet are what make up their diet (not wood!). They chew small tunnels and galleries inside the wood where they store their food, eggs, and larvae. The moisture and temperature of the wood provide their eggs and larvae with the perfect microclimate to survive and grow. The leak or other water damage will cause more structural damage to the home than the ants chewing through it. Seeing carpenter ants inside often means there’s a leak somewhere in the home. They will also get inside if a deck touching the home is rotting outside.
Carpenter Ant Treatment
Our carpenter treatment uses a specific product that allows all the ants inside a colony to get the product on them. A carpenter ant colony has multiple nests. There is a parent nest and multiple satellite nests. The parent nests are often outside inside trees or tree stumps. They house the queen ant, her eggs, larvae, and thousands of workers. As these nests reach their full capacity a group of workers leave the parent nest. They carry eggs and larvae with them to build a satellite nest. They will travel up to 100 yards away to find another nest location. Most satellite nests are inside buildings or homes. Because over-the-counter products kill the ants on contact the product will never reach the parent nest where the queen is located. We spray around the foundation of the home and around decks and trees that are touching the home. It takes 6 to 12 hours for an ant to die from the product. It will take 30 days for the entire carpenter ant colony to be exterminated.
