Carpenter ants vary in color and size. Typically, large black to reddish black, ranging in size of up to 5/8th of an inch. A carpenter ant colony consists of a primary nest and multiple satellite nests with 15,000 to 20,000 members in a mature colony. Homeowners that notice large black winged ants are an indication of a mature colony. Typically, a colony does not produce winged ants known as swarmer’s until it is several years old.

The primary nest house the queen and larvae. The primary nest is generally located in a moist, decaying tree stump or a large damaged tree limb cavity from a broken branch.

Multiple satellite nests consist of worker-members that build and expand nests many times in homes foraging food to bring back to feed the queen and larvae in the primary nest.

Water-damaged wood behind our walls, wood joists or ice damning causing water damage in attics will release a pheromone drawing carpenter ants inside the home. Carpenter ants do not digest the wood like termites. Carpenter ants chew and cast the wood out making small sawdust piles known as “Frass”. Frass contains ant body parts and other insects mixed in the sawdust. After vacuuming up and it reappears, it is your indication of carpenter ants. Sometimes, a large mature colony can be heard chewing the wood frame of the structure.

Homeowners are not always aware of carpenter ants inside the home, because they are nocturnal. Most of the time they are discovered during a remodel project with the replacement of a deck, patio door, windows, or a kitchen. From 10 to 2 am, it is possible to follow the workers foraging from the satellite nest in the home to the primary nest up to 300 feet away.
