Carpenter ants vary in color and size. Typically, large black to reddish black, ranging in size of up to 5/8th of an inch. A carpenter ant colony consists of a primary nest and multiple satellite nests with 15,000 to 20,000 members in a mature colony. Homeowners that notice large black winged ants are an indication of a mature colony. Typically, a colony does not produce winged ants known as swarmer’s until it is several years old.
The primary nest house the queen and larvae. The primary nest is generally located in a moist, decaying tree stump or a large damaged tree limb cavity from a broken branch.
Multiple satellite nests consist of worker-members that build and expand nests many times in homes foraging food to bring back to feed the queen and larvae in the primary nest.
