Did you know that carpenter ants are not native to Minnesota? It’s true, they originate from Asia. There are several different types of carpenter ant species. In fact, there are more than 20 different types known to scientists. One of the main types we see here in Wayzata, and the surrounding suburbs is the black carpenter ant, also known as, Camponotus pennsylvanicus.

“I called BOGO Pest Control and will never use anyone else. Scott came, assessed the situation, and explained why it is happening and what the plan to fix it is. Very thorough and all about customer service. I will not recommend anyone else.”
-Kerri in St. Louis Park

As a homeowner, you may find yourself asking “why are carpenter ants in my house?” in fear of what they can do to the wood structural framing of the home. These ants are highly attracted to wood that has been exposed to water. The water damages the wood and weakens it. That makes it easier for the ants to chew to create a hollowed-out living space for one of their nest sites. The whole colony is made up of multiple nest sites, with only one primary site where the queen lives. That nest site is in an area that remains moist so that her eggs can develop. The other remaining nest sites are called “satellite nests”. They can be up to 300 feet from the primary nest site. There are 15,000 to 20,000 members in a mature colony. It will usually take around 5 to 7 years for a colony to fully mature.

Sometimes, a carpenter’s ant nest site is discovered when a window is being replaced, or a door is getting replaced. Customers have also called BOGO Pest Control when they have removed their deck to replace it, only to find a full-blown nest site. We have also been called when a roof is being replaced and carpenter ants are discovered in the rafters or the decking under the shingles. The good news is, we have a simple solution to take care of all types of carpenter ant infestations!

This is a pest issue that should be left to professionals. In this case, I highly recommend you hire BOGO Pest Control to perform one treatment that will ensure the entire colony is taken care of.
