Tactics Used By the Pest Control Industry to Sell a Mouse Service

Using Contracts in pest control

Contracts

Many pest control companies use phobias as a tactic to get individuals to sign contracts. These contracts allow them to keep their customers paying a residual amount of money each month or bi-monthly. By using this sales model these companies do not want to completely solve your pest problem. By solving the problem they would no longer have a reason to come back to the property for another service.

Diseases/Viruses

There are a variety of diseases that can be related and tracked back to different pest infestations. But many of them are not as common as what the industry is advertising. The most common virus that is brought up to scare customers is a respiratory virus called Hantavirus. According to the CDC in Minnesota alone, there have only been 2 documented cases of people carrying this virus between 1993 and 2021. When a mouse is carrying the virus it can spread through their urine and feces. For a human to transmit it they would need to physically cause the feces and urine particles to become airborne. This would only be possible if someone inside the attic physically moved around the insulation themselves by “swimming through it”. It’s important to note that most mice in Minnesota do not carry this virus. When it is found inside mice it is often in very rural areas.

What They Are Selling

Poison bait inside the home

Refilling Poison Inside Homes

The pest control industry is receiving residual income by refilling mouse poison inside their customers’ homes monthly or bi-monthly. This service is not solving the mouse problem. This only prolongs the problem. The companies that sell this service use contracts to trap their customers into paying a monthly fee for a year or longer. When doing this the mice are still getting inside the home to feed on the poison. In turn, the home will never be mouse-free by only using poison. The poison can also lead to unpleasant smells. After they eat the poison there is no telling where their dead bodies may end up. Sometimes they may make their way outside but they often just die behind a wall leaving a terrible scent the homeowner has to live with for weeks at a time.

Selling insulation

New Insulation

By far the most expensive service sold by the pest control industry is new attic insulation. These companies quote $5,000-$50,000 for this service and sometimes even more! They exploit people’s phobias to sell this service and product. They scare them with diseases like the hantavirus. They also threaten if it’s not done right away they could have hundreds of mice living in their home. The new insulation is advertised as being “pest-proof”. But there is no such thing as “pest-proof” insulation. If there were mice in the attic before the insulation was replaced there will be mice in the attic after. The only way to keep mice out of the home is by sealing the entry points they use on the outside of the home.
