Mice

Mice in winter

Mice do not hibernate in the winter. They continue to stay active even on the coldest days of the year. Mice will go in and out of the home to find nuts and seeds to bring back inside. When inside, mice nest inside the insulation to stay warm. Most homes will show evidence of mice nesting in the attic insulation. Some pest companies will say this is a health risk for homeowners. There have only been 2 reported cases of Hantavirus in Minnesota since 1993. If a mouse were carrying any diseases, the only way a homeowner would come in contact with them would be if they moved through the insulation, forcing the particles to go airborne and breathe them in. Unfortunately, even without mice, inhaling insulation is extremely toxic and unhealthy. Yet no one is getting sick from living in a home with insulation. To keep mice from getting inside the home, all the entry points they use on the exterior need to be sealed. Removing the insulation will not prevent mice from getting inside.

Spiders

Spiders in Elk River Minnesota

Spiders can be found living inside homes all year long. In the winter, there are no insects for them to eat outside. So when spiders are found inside at this time of year, there is usually another insect infestation happening. Most commonly, it’s a home with ants, flies, or overwintering fall insects. Homes with spiders may find piles of insect appendages mixed with white and black sploges from spider excrement. These piles are commonly found in unfinished rooms, corners, and around basement windows. Our winter spider service focuses on the interior of the home to treat any unfinished rooms and basements. All the spiders that are inside the home will go into unfinished rooms because the exposed wires, plumbing lines, and joists are all used by spiders to navigate in and out of the home.

Ants

Ants inside kitchen in Minnetonka

Ants are commonly found inside homes in the winter. Ants can stay active under heated floors, cement slabs, and inside insulated foundations and crawlspaces. The most common ant to see at this time of year is a pavement ant. These ants prefer to nest in sandy soil. When homes and garages are built, they lay a layer of sand before laying the foundation and pouring the cement slab. If this sand stays insulated, the ants will be able to nest inside it all year round. The ants that are visible inside make up less than 10% the entire colony. Our winter ant service focuses on treating inside cracks and crevices that the ants are crawling out of. We use a product that does not kill them on contact. It allows the ants to carry our product back to the nest to spread and kill the entire colony. Each winter ant service comes with an exterior spring follow-up to prevent the ants from coming back once it gets warmer.

House Centipedes

House centipedes

Centipedes are moisture pests that are commonly found living inside basements in the winter. Centipedes need moisture to survive. Without water, centipedes will die from dehydration. To prevent seeing centipedes in your home in the winter, we recommend having dehumidifiers running in any unfinished rooms. Especially inside unfinished rooms with laundry units and sinks. Our centipede service is designed to go after all moisture pests. We focus on treating the unfinished rooms and basements. Any insect that crosses over our product will die in 30-45 minutes.
